Citrus in my Toothpaste?!

We already know citrus fruits have very beneficial properties such as their high content of vitamin C and their essential oils.

Did you know that for a long time, citrus peel was used for teeth whitening?

Now we know that due to its acidity (given by the citric acid) citrus fruits can actually damage your smile. This happens because acids weaken tooth enamel, especially when eaten without other foods. Of course you can have a refreshing lemonade or orange juice anytime you like (or put lemon juice on your tacos 😉) but remember to drink water after that. And of course brush your teeth 20 minutes after eating.

But then, isn't it dangerous if my toothpaste has citrus in it?

No! Because to provide the citrus distinctive aroma and flavor to different products, the essential oils are used. Not the juice, which posesses the citric acid.

The essential oil of citrus fruits such as orange and tangerine is extracted from the peel of the fruit. This extraction process is known as "cold pressing" and basically consists of "squeezing" the oils from the peel.

Of the molecules contained in citrus essential oils, limonene represents between 90 and 97% and it is precisely what gives citrus its characteristic aroma. That is why essential oils are used to flavor various products.

Similarly, the limonene contained in citrus essential oils has beneficial health properties. Thanks to it, citrus essential oils are:

  • Antiseptic

  • Antibacterial

  • Antifungal

And these are properties we look for in a toothpaste.

Essential oils are not acidic like citric acid. In combination with the other ingredients in our TeethTabs, they achieve the ideal alkalinity of a toothpaste.

As we have told you in other posts, calcium phosphate, xylitol and bicarbonate are agents that help raise the pH of the mouth to facilitate the remineralization of enamel. These benefits, added to the properties of citrus essential oils, make a citrus toothpaste not only suitable, but also very beneficial for your dental health.
